Music Monday: Sia, Ego and Music Making

Yeah, yeah, it's Tuesday but this is titled Music Monday. Just pretend it's Monday. Gotta make sure the alliteration holds true. :)

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a bit of a classical music snob.

Not the most conservative of snobs...I actually like John Cage’s 4’33” for the thought experiment it affords, for instance.

But I can be fairly picky when it comes to the music I listen to.

With that self-image in mind, it’s a surprise to me that I’ve come to really enjoy and thrive off of Sia Furler’s music.

If any of you don’t know who Sia is, here’s a good picture:

I’ll be the first to admit, Sia’s style just...strikes me as super odd. For instance, when asked if she was religious she says that her Higher Power is “called 'Whatever Dude' and he's a queer, surfing Santa that's a bit like my grandpa, so yes." Whatever Dude is tattooed on her hand. This is just an example of one of her...quirks of personality that don’t quite jive with my own.

From her avant garde fashion style to her dancing choreography, Sia’s musical process is simply odd.

But in spite of all that I continued to find myself drawn to her music, and wondered why.

Reading into interviews, I found a side to Sia’s characteristics and view on music-making that explain why.

Sia’s use of these wigs when she performs actually has an extraordinary purpose. According to Sia:

"I'm not doing it because I think I'm ugly; I'm trying to have some control over my image. And I'm allowed to maintain some modicum of privacy. But also I would like not to be picked apart or for people to observe when I put on ten pounds or take off ten pounds or I have a hair extension out of place or my fake tan is botched." Sia is a big-name pop musician who doesn’t want the attention.

Maddy Ziegler, the young woman who dances for many of Sia’s music videos, had this to say about her in 2015:

“Well, the first day I met her, she just came up and gave me a giant hug and said, ‘I can’t believe I’m with you right now! I’m such a big fan!’ It was just so funny because she’s a really big star and a really successful singer and everything, and I couldn’t believe that she was fan-girling over me.”

She is also a big-name pop musician who is not aware of, or does not care about, that status...she has enough humility to fangirl over a young dancer.

I am a believer that our intentions and selves translate into the kind of music we make.

And as bizarre as is Sia’s style, one cannot deny the passion and love for music that underlies her music making.

I don’t care what kind of musical style it is, whether pop or classical or any other form: the musician who makes music for a worthy intention is a musician worth listening to.
